Items Needed:

  • Cuda/Piranha Vacuum Tester
  • Piranha Shaft Seal
  • 3mm Hex (Allen) Key
  • 2.5mm Hex (Allen) Key
  • Flat Head Screwdriver
  • Loctite 515 Flange Sealant
  • Loctite 243 Thread Locker
  • 3 Thread Locking Set Screws
  • 1 M4x10 Thread locking screw
  • 1 Pulley Drive Belt
  • 2 263 O-Rings
  • 2 262 O-Rings

 

Instructions

  1. Remove body/battery from tail and remove the old O-Rings from tail section.
  2. Remove nose from body/battery and remove the old O-Rings from body section and install new ones.
  3. Using the 3mm Hex (Allen) key, remove the three screws that hold the motor plate to the tail and set aside.

    Remove all three perimeter screws then center shaft screw using a 3mm Hex (Allen) Key.
  4. Using the 3mm Hex (Allen) Key, remove the center screw on the motor plate to release the propeller shaft and get rid of screw.
  5. Lift the motor plate, with motor and electronics, out of the tail section.
  6. Remove Pulley Drive belt and discard.
    Remove and discard pulley.
    Remove and discard pulley drive belt.
  7. Using the 5/64” Hex (Allen) Key, remove the 2 thread locking set screws that secure the gear to the prop shaft and discard.
    Remove the 2 thread locking set screws that secure the gear to the prop shaft and discard.
  8. Lift the gear off the prop shaft and set aside.

  9. Turn the tail section over so the propeller is facing up.
    Turn tail section so propeller is facing up.

  10. Lift propeller shaft out of the tail section.

    Remove shaft out of tail.
  11. On the propeller shaft, remove the spring and components from the prop shaft.
    Remove components from shaft.
    Remove components from shaft.
  12. Using your finger, carefully pry the white ceramic shaft seal out of the tail.

    Use finger to remove shaft seal.

  13. Wipe the area that holds the shaft seal in place with a paper towel.
  14. On the new shaft seal, apply silicone grease to the o-ring on the shaft seal.

  15. On the shaft seal there is a ridge on one of the faces. Place the ridge down, smooth side up, and press in with your thumbs.

  16. On the prop shaft, install the Shaft Seal spring and graphite ring. Use the included lubricant, or 3-In-One Oil, to make the installation of the spring and graphite ring easier. Do not get any lubricant on the face of the graphite ring.

  17. Lubricate the prop shaft with the same oil that you used on the shaft seal spring and install the prop shaft into the tail.
    After lubricating the entire shaft, slide the prop shaft into the tail section.

  18. Turn the tail section, with the prop shaft installed over
  19. On the gear that you’ve removed, install the set screws, using the 5/64” Hex (Allen) Key, so they are just protruding the inside of the gear.

  20. Slide the gear onto the prop shaft, making sure to line the set screws up with the grooves.

  21. Use the 5/64” Hex (Allen) Key to screw the set screws in until they do not move.
  22. Now re-install the motor plate with Heat Sink.
  23. Place the new Pulley Drive Belt around the gear and hold in place while you place the motor mounting plate in the tail and secure the belt around the gear on the motor.

  24. Using the 3mm Hex (Allen) Key, screw the M4x10 Thread Locking screw into the prop shaft. You should notice prop shaft being drawn up tight to the motor plate.
  25. Using the 3mm Hex (Allen) Key, install the three screws that hold the motor plate to the tail.
  26. Once done, ensure the belt is aligned properly on both gears. This takes a bit of work and you will need both hands inside the tail section to ensure alignment.
  27. Install the vacuum tester on the tail section and place the nose on top of the tester.
    Make sure you vacuum test your Piranha without the battery.

  28. Draw vacuum to around 15 inHg/50 kPa. Note the gauge reading and wait 15 min.
  29. After 15 min, check the gauge. If the gauge did not move, you are ready to go diving. If the gauge did move, you will need to trouble shoot to see where the leak is.
